Common Pests
In all Houston areas, from Sugarland to Humble, there is a wide variety of pests that are
very common but sometimes difficult to treat. The main insects are: roaches, ants,
spiders, silverfish, earwigs, wasps, mice and rats. Most of these insects are fairly easy to
control. However, when dealing with roaches and ants it is very important to identify the
species. Identifying the problem species and eliminating the problem is what our
technicians are trained and skilled in doing. We confidently guarantee that we can
conquer any pest problem you may be facing.
Simple American roaches (sometimes called tree roaches), are larger and mainly live
outside, can be controlled easily with an interior treatment, as long as a barrier on the
outside is maintained. On the other hand, German roaches can be very tricky. They are
smaller in size and have light brown bands of color running down the length of their
back, much like a German racecar. Once inside, they live off the crumbs behind a stove
or between counters and multiply very quickly. Unlike tree roaches, these can take
several treatments to get them under control and always involve treating the interior.
Fire ants are also a very pesky and wide-spread problem. For anyone unfamiliar with the
South, the bite from a fire ant is unlike anything else. Their name describes both their red
color and the way a bite feels – exactly like fire. Another ant that is common to this area
is the carpenter ant. From its name you can tell that wood is not a friend to this
ant. They are sometimes confused with termites unless they are identified by a
technician that is trained in both areas. They can damage door frames or any other kind
of wood structure in your home.
Silverfish are more of a nuisance than anything. They are gray in color and when
stepped on, seem to look more like dust than anything. Most don’t get longer than ½-3/4
inche in length and they also have antennae. They like to live in and eat paper products
but originate in the attic.
Earwigs mainly live outside in mulch areas or flowerbeds but sometimes make their way
into our homes. They enjoy dark moist areas especially underneath sinks and behind
dishwashers.
Wasps can be found anywhere in trees, eaves, chimneys, swing sets or even barbeque
pits. It is important to maintain all of these areas because wasps emit a pheromone that
they leave behind with their nest. Unless they are properly treated, they will return to the
same place by following their pheromone.
