Size: Body 3/4-inch long and abdomen 3/8-inch in diameter
Appearance: Black or dark brown. The red markings on the abdomen often connect to form an hourglass shape.
Behavior: Black widow spiders create irregular, scaffold-type webs in protected areas near the ground. Because their bite may cause severe cramping and body pain, black widows are considered dangerous, especially among the young and the elderly. The black widow spider is shy and nocturnal in habit, usually staying hidden in her web, hanging belly upward. Although not aggressive, she may rush out and bite when her web is disturbed or when accidentally touched.
Habitat: Black widows prefer to construct their webs in secluded, protected locations where other insects frequent. For this reason, bites usually occur when picking up items, putting on a shoe, or even using the bathroom.
How to Control: Because of the danger involved, it is best to contact a professional. Call PPC right now and we’ll come out and give you an estimate.
