Termites Invading Your Home

Termites

Termites: How do you know if they are in your home?

Termites are not easy to spot. They prefer the soft inner layers of wood in the construction materials used in homes, fencing and other structures rather than the outer ones. There are ways to spot them, but you need to go outside to look. Here are a few of the most common signs.

Swarmers

These are young, winged termites that leave the nest in spring, often in swarms of hundreds at a time. They look like flying ants, unless you examine them closely. They have straight, beaded antennae and two sets of wings that are roughly the same size.

Termite tubes

Termites prefer to travel underground or in covered spaces, because their bodies are relatively fragile. To allow them to do this, they construct mud tubes, which look like straws, These are often found around the foundation of the home or building in which the termites are nesting.

When termites begin making themselves at home in your house, they will seal small holes and cracks in your house with mud. They do this to reduce airflow and seal in moisture.

Damaged Wood

As an infestation grows, damage to the wood of the structure becomes obvious.

How do I inspect my home?

Inspecting your home for termites is relatively simple. Just walk around outside your home and look closely for the signs listed above. Experts recommend you conduct an inspection at least once a year.  If you live in a very moist climate where termites are more of a problem, you might consider inspecting your home every three to six months. Termites are most active when temperatures are cool, but not cold, and there is plenty of moisture. In many areas, this is from mid-September through December.

If you find any evidence of termites, you should treat your house for them.  Contact several exterminators to get estimates before deciding on one. Even though termites are a serious problem, you do not need to panic.
