Common Spiders in Las Vegas

For many people, spiders are a nightmare. Fear of them, also known as arachnophobia, is suffered by about 6% of the population on earth. The best way to get over this fear is to arm yourself with some knowledge about the different types of spiders in your area.

Las Vegas is home to around 40 different types of spiders. Because of its arid climate, it is the perfect breeding ground for several types of arachnids. Here is a list of the more populous ones.

Funnel Weaver

Funnel SpiderFunnel Weaver Spiders are extremely tiny and fast spiders making them hard to find. They usually live and build webs on the ground. Like most spiders, they are venomous but they are very harmless to humans because of their small size.

They can be spotted by their mist-like webbing with a hole carved out in the middle.

Garden Spider

Garden SpiderGarden spiders are medium sized and very colorful. They range from brown to yellow and spend most of their days hanging from trees and plants. They are identified mostly by the formation of their legs, which makes the shape of an ‘X’.

Garden spiders leave extra, easy to see webbing in their nests so larger animals will not walk through and destroy it. They are harmless to humans because of their size, like the funnel weaver.

Wolf Spider

Wolf SpiderThis spider is easy to spot because they are usually massive for a spider. They look extremely intimidating, with two large eyes and six smaller ones.

Wolf spiders live alone and usually out in the bushes or sandy areas. They are actually harmless to humans, despite their large size. They will usually run when scared.

Violin Spider

Violin SpiderAlso known as recluse spiders, these spiders are medium sized with a violin shaped mark on their thorax. Their legs tend to sprawl out in a wide pattern, and their bodies are very brown. These are definitely ones to avoid if all possible, because their venom has a necrotic substance in them that can really do serious damage to living tissue. They generally stay out of the public eye, preferring dark spaces. This leads to trouble when they have taken up residence in an old shoe or under a box in the garage.
