Luridae

Characteristics

The family Luridae is very similar to other scorpion families. The scorpion’s body is made of the cephalothorax and the abdomen. A pair of five eyes is placed on the carapace with a pair of median eyes on the front. They have four pairs of jointed legs made for walking and digging, a pair of claws for gripping their prey, and the tail that contains the telson or their venom.

Habitat

They can survive in warmer climates, which are why they are in deserts, grasslands, high mountains, caves, forests, pine forest, and the likes. Instead of creating their own burrows, these scorpions will just make use of any form of shelter they think they will be safe in. They are good at running and climbing, which allow them to wander easily around buildings.

Behavior

The family Luridae is nocturnal. When they are found in desert lands, they can only be found at night because they cannot produce their own heat. Although species still vary from the environment they are in, but all of them have a common characteristic of getting their body heat from external sources.

Food

They eat small invertebrates, lizards, and mice.

Life Cycle

The group Luridae reproduces through a long courtship. The male will transfer his spermatophore to the female. After the process is done, the male and the female scorpion will go on their separate ways. Unlike spiders, scorpions develop embryos inside their body and will deliver their young just like people. Once the mother gives birth to the scorpions one by one, the young ones will still stay at the back of their mother so that they can stay safe from other predators and get the nourishment they need. A female scorpion can give birth to three scorpions to until 100 or more. Depending on their environment and food availability, a scorpion can live to 4 to 25 years.
