Quick Overview of the Common Cockroaches in the Southwest United States

Cockroach Pest Control

From the rubbish leftovers of Southern California to the garages in Philadelphia, cockroaches are known to thrive where there is moisture or leftover food. Cockroaches are universally found everywhere. They can be difficult to control because they are able to reproduce in a shorter period than other insects.

Cockroaches are often found in apartments where multi-family occupants are present. Those who frequent move can transport cockroaches and may increase the chances of an infestation. While infestations are a threat to most homes, it is also necessary to know the different types of cockroaches that live in the southwest of the United States and the threat they possess.

Common Cockroaches in the United States

Brown Banded Cockroach

This cockroach does not need a lot of moisture to survive, which makes this small desert-dwelling brown banded cockroach a powerful roach. Most roaches would avoid the places that it can go. This roach can be found in libraries and universities, where it can feast on the glue in the binding books. It can be found nesting behind pictures on walls, in furniture, in light switch hardware, within computers, and other electronic appliances.

German Brown Cockroaches

The German brown cockroach commonly builds their homes where food and water are near, which is why they can be found in kitchens and bathrooms. Search for them in crevices in walls and hidden recesses under the refrigerator since these are perfect places for them to breed. They can travel through tiny spaces where pipes pass through walls and can easily get into the smallest crevice.

Wood Roaches

During the summer nights, you may be able to find these wood roaches flying around porch lights. Unlike their cousins, they prefer the outdoors and will die before reproducing. They live in trees and under rocks, wood piles, and leaf litter.

American Cockroach

They are also known as sewer roaches that flourish in humid underground conditions that the city sewer provides. They can be found in restaurant kitchens and storage areas of swimming pools, golf courses and other commercial places. These roaches comes out to breed during the summer and rainy months and visits human dwellings frequently.

Turkestan Cockroach

Compared with the more familiar German, American, brown banded cockroach, the Turkestan cockroach is a newcomer in the United States. These cockroaches were first seen near military facilities, and likely hitched rides on equipment and troops returning from their homes. Turkestan roaches are well established now in the Southwest and certain places in the Southeast. They are commonly found around houses, basements, equipment boxes and in people’s immediate living spaces.

Cockroach Control

Cockroaches and their many species are major carriers of pathogens and diseases. They can carry Salmonella, dysentery, gastroenteritis, and other stomach complaint organisms. They are a nuisance and must be dealt with as soon as they are found in homes.

If you think you have any of these cockroaches, you will need to inspect the areas where these roaches are located. Check under all obvious places where they could stay. Once found, place cockroach baits to trap them. Also, you can use insecticidal surface sprays to get rid of them effectively.
