Droppings

Mouse droppings are very tiny, but if you find them you can be certain that you have a mouse in the house – and probably more than one. Holes in walls, cabinets, and furniture

Mice will seek out quiet, dark areas to make their nests and raise their young. They may chew through a wall or go through the bottom of a mattress or box spring in order to find a safe, out of the way place to nest. If you see any small holes or chewed areas, especially in out of the way places, it could indicate a mouse problem. Remember, if you can stick a pencil through the hole, a mouse can fit through it so the chances the hole is too small is highly unlikely.

Shredded paper, fabric, or other nesting materials

When mice or rats are seeking out a good area to nest they are also looking for good nesting materials. This could be papers or books that you have stored in the attic, clothing you have in drawers, or the stuffing from your sofa. If you notice odd tears or holes in fabric, chewed books or papers, or find shredded paper or fabric, you most likely have a nesting mouse. It also means that that one mouse is about to turn into several.

Scratching and squeaking in the walls

You may never actually see a furry little body scurry across the floor, but you might hear them in cabinets or walls. Mice and rats are nocturnal, meaning that they are more active at night. They are also great at hiding and tend to be quite shy. However, when they do become active you might hear them squeaking, scratching, chewing, and scurrying in the walls or under your furniture – and you are more likely to hear these noises at night. If you are the least bit squeamish, this can be quite unsettling, especially if you weren’t aware that what you have been hearing are likely mice or rats. It might be time to call a pro.
